To build cooperative relationships between Virginia’s Tribal Nations and state agencies, we are hosting the sixth annual tuition-free Sovereign Nations of Virginia Conference. Conference attendees include representatives from federal and state agencies, nonprofit organizations, universities, businesses, and tribal citizens and staff. The purpose is to increase the understanding of tribal sovereignty and to share best practices in working with tribes for the good of all citizens of the Commonwealth of Virginia.
We are excited to announce our 2026 program:
Session 1 – Respect: Acknowledging the inherent worth, dignity, and unique worldviews of Indigenous peoples and their knowledge systems.
Session 2 – Relevance: Ensuring that K-12 and higher education include meaningful Indigenous cultural and historic content for all learners.
Session 3 – Reciprocity: Building relationships based on mutual sharing, understanding, and benefit, moving beyond extractive research models.
Session 4 – Responsibility: Recognizing the ethical obligations of the Commonwealth of Virginia to include Indigenous nations in legal codes and opportunities.
A printed program will be available for in-person attendees, and a PDF version will be posted on the conference website.
Format: In-Person and Virtual. Live stream via Zoom provided by VPM, Virginia’s Home for Public Media. Recordings of all sessions will be available on the conference website soon after the conference and a link sent to all registered attendants. Registration Fees: $50 general in-person; $35 tribal citizen in-person; $15 virtual.
